Spanish art collective recently installed a nine-meter high luminous Christmas tree created from 3,000 plastic bags in Durham, England.
The '' was part of Durham's festival. The group invited people to donate their plastic bags in exchange for cloth bags, receiving around 4,000 bags in total. Luzinterruptus also created strands of garland by using lights in leftover bags and hanging them across the streets.
The artists wanted to bring attention to the increased use of plastic bags during the holiday season, saying the installation will "help to raise awareness of the excessive use of plastic bags and the consequences that this consumption has on the environment... We thought about a grand Christmas tree, built of the bags used during the period prior to Christmas, the dates in which their use dramatically increases."
