Former HTC Executive Alleged to Have Leaked Company Secrets

A former executive at HTC, and five other employees have been charged with leaking company secrets and submitting fake expenses claims in the latest blow for the struggling smartphone manufacturer.




The former Vice-President of design at HTC, Thomas Chien has charged with leaking a smartphone interface design, the Taipei District Prosecutors Office said. The prosecutor added that the information was provided to unnamed people based in Beijing in exchange for a stake in a new smartphone manufacturer they planned to set up.



Mr Chien, and the five other employees were also charged with receiving bribes and false expenses claims worth around US$1.1 million. Three unnamed suppliers have also been charged with paying bribes.



All six face a theoretical maximum of up to 10 years in jail, although the minimal impact of the leaks is not expected to lead to such a long sentence if convicted.



"The company expects employees to observe and practice the highest levels of integrity and ethics," HTC said in a statement.



"Protecting the company's proprietary and intellectual properties, privacy and security is a core fundamental responsibility of every employee. The company does not condone any violation."
