The have 16 players heading into free agency with very little cap room to play with as of now. A few cuts and some contract restructuring will create some space, but Kansas City will not be the same big spenders this offseason that they were last year. This puts them in a tight spot for a free agent they would really love to bring back in DEXTER MCCLUSTER. Here's a look at some of the pros and cons for the versatile wide receiver/return man.
PROS:
ANDY REID has loved McCluster's skill-set since he came out of and was very close to drafting him in 2010 as head coach of the . In his first full season as primary punt return man, he led the league with 686 yards and two touchdowns, earning his first Pro Bowl selection. He did a solid job as the third wide receiver with most of his success coming on underneath routes. The fans around Kansas City absolutely love him and definitely do not want to see him go.
CONS:
At 5-foot-8, he's a very small target and tough to hit downfield unless he is wide open. McCluster was outstanding as a return man in 2013, but he is more replaceable than his Pro Bowl nod would suggest. Special teams coordinator DAVE TOUB is arguably the best out there, and the Chiefs will still have great special teams with Toub on staff.
BOTTOM LINE:
The Chiefs really want to bring back McCluster, but other teams will likely be able to offer him more. He's a versatile asset, a fan favorite and hopefully for Kansas City he'll give the Chiefs a discount in order to stay home.
