Hot Wheels Movie in the Works

With the success of the Fast and Furious franchise, I'm surprised more studios haven't released a swarm of other movies based on high-speed, high-octane automobile adventures.Besides Pixar's animated Cars, there haven't been too many vehicular-themed motion pictures, at least not of the blockbuster variety. Maybe flops like the Speed Racer adaptation have something to do with it. Despite the risks, Legendary Pictures is betting on striking some automotive-adventure gold with a live-action movie based on the HOT WHEELS toys.

I grew up playing with Hot Wheels cars, but I wonder if they can figure out a good enough story to make a feature film work. Will this turn into a Battleship disaster? Simon Crane has been hired to direct -- he's an acclaimed stunt coordinator (Braveheart, Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, The World Is Not Enough, Hancock, World War Z, etc.), so we know that cool chases, chaotic crashes, and crazy car stunts will be part of the action.Storywise, we'll have ot keep our fingers crossed that screenwriter Paul Attanasio can deliver the goods -- he also wrote the excellent Donnie Brasco and Quiz Show, but he's also responsible for the crappy Michael Crichton adaptation Sphere.

Legendary Pictures has brought us some excellent films during its short history -- The Dark Knight trilogy, , and Inception -- but also some stinkers, such as Lady in the Water. If Hot Wheels makes it to the silver screen, will it roar to triumph or screech to a disappointing finish?
