The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) will hear options Monday to free up some space at Minneapolis-St.Paul International Airport's smaller terminal.
reports Terminal 2, formerly the Humphrey Terminal, has recently become more congested due to airlines adding more flights.
"In the last five years, we have had Southwest come in, as well as Spirit Airlines," airport spokeswoman Melissa Scovronski toldearlier this month. "Sun Country has come out of bankruptcy, and they believe they will be able to expand their schedule here over the next several years."
But the 10-gate terminal is running out of space to handle more planes and more people.
About 3.3 million passengers passed through the terminal last year, according to MPR, which is twice the number the facility saw five years ago.
One option MAC will consider would relocate excess flights to Terminal 1, which is also seeing higher traffic. Another option would expand Terminal 2, which would be a major step toward the commission's ultimate goal of moving all airlines other than Delta to Terminal 2, KSTP said.
The proposals will be discussed at MAC's monthly board meeting at 1 p.m. The television station says a final vote won't happen until sometime in November.
The airport has taken smaller steps to accommodate the surge in passengers. Surdyk's Flights, a full-service restaurant, bar and wine market , one of four food outlets added to the terminal in the last year.
