Everything We Know About Spike Lee's Kickstarter Movie

When director Spike Lee announced Monday that he was taking to Kickstarter to fund his newest flick, referred to on the fundraising page as "," it was assumed that we would soon know many more details, such as, oh, the plot? A title? The cast?

NextMovie was invited to Lee's Brooklyn office Tuesday to chat one-on-one with the director, hoping to extract some of the deets. What we got was the revelation that "Magic Mike" director , and very little else about the movie itself. And Lee likes it that way.

"It's my opinion that today's movie-going audience has been spoiled," he said. "They want to know about every nook and cranny about a movie before they see it. And I think Hollywood is responsible for that because when they make these trailers, they give everything away! You go to a movie theater today, sit through eight, nine trailers, and you know what? You don't have to go to the movie because you just saw the trailer! And I hate that."

"When I go to a movie, I want to be surprised. I don't want to know everything about it. And for that reason, that's where I'm trying to keep it to the chest, as much information about this film. Because this is the type of film where the audiences need to be surprised. They need to find discoveries."

That said, here are the few details we were able to glean about the movie, from the mouth of the director himself. Kickstarter

IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH BLOOD ...

"So, what I will say - this is a film about people addicted to blood."

... BUT IT'S NOT A 'TWILIGHT' REMAKE.

"But who are not vampires. No, this is not the black 'Twilight.' And this is not 'Blacula.'"

"So, it's about people who are addicted to blood and how they are trying to cope with that, with this disease."

PREPARE FOR NUDITY. THINGS ARE ABOUT TO GET HOT UP IN HERE.

"I call it a psychological bloody thriller, with naked people. This is gonna be my most sensuous film. There will be more sexuality in this film in anything I've done, except--no, this is gonna be on par with 'She's Gotta Have It.'" Kickstarter

IT MAY BE ABOUT VIOLENCE, OR IT MAY BE ABOUT HIV.

"Well, there is that in the world today," Lee said vaguely when asked if the blood-borne disease was a plot element.

OR MAYBE SOMETHING ELSE ENTIRELY.

"Well, it's people who are -- in order to survive -- they must have blood. But they're not vampires."

THE ONLY EXPLOSIONS WILL BE OF THE NON-PYROTECHNIC VARIETY.

"In my opinion, the studios are top heavy on these 3-D blockbuster, eardrum-shattering special effect films," Lee said. Asked if there was even so much as a sparkler in the flick, he answered, "No, there are explosions, but of human emotions. Not buildings blowing up. Not the world exploding." Kickstarter

DON'T EXPECT TO SEE FAMILIAR FACES IN THE YET-TO-BE-REVEALED CAST.

"No one's been cast yet, but there's not gonna be any recognizable names," he said. "This is gonna be a young, fresh, talented cast, people on the verge of blowing up.'Do the Right Thing' was Rosie Perez's first film, Robin Harris' first film, Martin Lawrence's first film. 'Jungle Fever' was Halle Berry's first film, Queen Latifah's first film. 'Clockers' was Mekhi Phifer's first film. And there are gonna be some actors in this film that people will be amazed by."

BUT FAMILIAR TERRAIN WILL MAKE AN APPEARANCE.

"We're gonna shoot in New York. Brooklyn. All over Brooklyn."

IT'S NOT A WORK IN PROGRESS.

"Oh yeah, script's done!" Kickstarter

THIS MOVIE IS GOING TO GET MADE, EVEN IF LEE HAS TO MAKE A BACKING PLEDGE TO HIMSELF.

Asked if he would contribute money to his own Kickstarter to put himself over the top, Lee answered in the affirmative. "Of course!" he said, laughing. "You gotta do what you gotta do. I mean, it's all hands on deck."
