Five older anime series for beginners.

Since I will soon be reviewing anime and manga for a popular website, I decided to do a quick post about five older series to introduce to fans of newer anime, or even those who are just looking for an introduction series.I made a point to choose each from a different genre so that comparing them to one another would be difficult.I also made sure that they were at least a decade old.I would have gone for much older series, however I just don't see a newbie watching Galaxy Express 999 without falling asleep, or Ranma 1/2 without feeling very confused. No offense to either of those mentioned. They each have merit in either artistic presentation or pure nostalgia depending on who you ask. However, what I am looking to talk about are accessible series with tangible story lines.I want to talk about relatable protagonists and villains that are recognizable as something more than a throwback from a saturday morning in the 80's.

Pop-Ed: Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor

It seems like every time news hits on this Batman Vs. Superman/Man of Steel 2/Justice League?/Air Bud 78: Superman and the Bat Pups movie, the internet goes into a state of chaos. With the exception of a Star Wars movie, or The Dark Knight Rises, I've never seen a film so nitpicked and analyzed, but here we are to discuss more MEGA casting news - Jesse Eisenberg is playing Lex Luthor, and Jeremy Irons is Alfred. As Adam West would say, "To the batcave we haven't one moment to lose!"

Disney Planning A Live Action Chip 'n Dale Movie And It's Going To Be Rescue Rangers Flavoured

I certainly enjoyed the Chip 'n Dale shorts I've seen but I'll have to admit, their late 80s TV revival with Rescue Rangers passed me by. I may have played a NES game for a couple of hours, maybe?

I'll get my chance soon enough, it seems, as have learned of plans inside Disney for a new, live-action movie derived from the Rescue Rangers premise, or near enough.

Outdated Review

Even though I call these things "Outdated" reviews, this is one is a little more relevant than most will be. The 17th of December saw the release of the first episode of the second season of The Walking Dead. More recently, the fourth season of The Walking Dead saw its midseason premiere. What's that, you're confused? In case you haven't kept abreast of Telltale Games' doings for the last several years, computer games can do that whole "season" and "episode" thing now. Let me try and explain how the TV show and the game are (and aren't) connected. Both are based on a series of graphic novels called (surprise) The Walking Dead. While the AMC show is a rough retelling of the Graphic Novel's overall story, with many liberties taken, the Telltale game follows a different story entirely, set in the same world but with a different cast of characters. BUT there is also another Walking Dead game, Survival Instinct, which is a spin-off from the show. But that's not a very good game anyway. So don't worry too much about it.

The parts that'd be considered more in line with the Adventure Game norm are simplified a great deal.

"Put Rain Runoff to Work"

"In today's commercial-construction industry, going green is on the minds of everyone from architects to contractors to building owners. And for good reason: A green building-especially one that is LEED-certified-is very attractive to tenants and is much less expensive for owners to operate in the long run.

A major consideration for any building is managing rainwater. Keeping it out of the building is critical, of course, but when the ground can't absorb stormwater, the overflow can cause flooding and devastate streams and wetlands. Impermeable surfaces such as roofs, roads, and parking lots can increase rainwater runoff by as much as 45% (source: IBM, Armonk, NY). The Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, has named urban stormwater runoff, which can carry a wide variety of pollutants, as a leading source of impairment to rivers, lakes, and estuaries, as well as the plant and animal life in them.

Using Pet Grooming Lockport NY Animal Lovers Bond With Their Pets

When thinking about pet grooming Lockport NY pet owners should know the value of a pet that is well groomed. It is important to the animal's hygiene and healthy well-being to be groomed on a regular basis. There is more to grooming that just giving the pet a bath and making sure that they are brushed. A well-groomed pet will have their teeth brushed, nails cut and eye area wiped off.

Pet owners can use the act of grooming as a time in which to bond with their pet. However, not all pet owners have the time or energy to do this job on their own. If this is the case, hiring a professional pet groomer could be in order. A professional will have the experience needed to give the animal a positive experience.

Using External Templates with Knockout.js

A guest post by Ryan Niemeyer, who has over 15 years of experience in the software industry working with primarily web-based technologies. He loves JavaScript, participating in the open source community, and trying to learn new things everyday. He is always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone that needs it. Since, 2010 Ryan has been involved with the Knockout.js project and writes about his experiences with it on his blog ().

When building a web application with , working with more than a handful of templates is a common occurrence. As the number of templates in your application grows, adding additional script tags for these templates becomes a pain point and a maintenance issue. As an alternative, having less templates by using control-flow bindings (if, with, and foreach) in larger blocks of markup is also not an ideal solution, as it does not promote reuse and has the same maintenance concerns. A better technique is to move each template's markup into individual files.

Paper Punk to Release TMNT and Spongebob Paper Construction Kits

Maker of paper-based construction toys, Paper Punk, has recently signed a licensing deal that gives them rights to develop paper-based construction kits based on two of Nickelodeon's hottest animated properties, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Spongebob Squarepants. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles kits are scheduled for a February 2014 release, while the Spongebob Squarepants ones are scheduled for the following mid-year.

"We know from a study I'm conducting at Stanford that people can learn to become more creative through hands-on building and making activities," said PAPER PUNK Founder/CEO Grace Hawthorne, a Stanford professor and mom. "When Nickelodeon invited us to make PAPER PUNK versions of their leading properties, we were very excited to offer new audiences a fun antidote to today's over-saturated digital environment. PAPER PUNK is a play experience and learning tool in one self-contained package."

How are things with the Holliedollie quilt?

Prima!

I have wanted to write this post for awhile but I always hesitated. Even as I write it I know it is something that I will probably continue to struggle with so I feel like I am not yet to the mastering stage to write and help someone else learn what I have... I still have some learning to do. However I still have something to say about the matter so I'll give it my best.

WHY IT'S NUMBER 8:

Sam Keith Gets His Sci-Fi On With Mars Attacks: First Born

The celebrated creator of The Maxx, SAM KEITH is teaming once again with his The Hollows cohort CHRIS RYALL to tell an EC style Sci-Fi tale. Mars Attacks: First Born is a four-issue series written by Ryall, drawn by Keith and co-plotted by both. It focuses on the after effects of the martian invasion and of a infant martian left behind. Was this an accident or some nefarious plan? And what is this about giant bugs?

"This series is a multi-tiered love letter," said series writer and IDW Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief CHRIS RYALL. "Every page shows not only the love Sam and I have for Mars Attacks, but also wild science-fiction tales from the past, the sorts of things WALLY WOOD drew in the pages of Weird Science-Fantasy and other EC comics. Our adoration of Wally's work is front and center in this series, but it's also a great next move for Sam and I after the working relationship we developed on The Hollows. And it surely gives Mars Attacks fans something special, in addition to also giving them some of the wanton carnage and gallows humor they've come to expect."

Channing Tatum May Be Overplaying His Hand By Starring in a 'Gambit' Movie

Fox's X-Men franchise is unique amongst most of the other superhero movie franchises in that its current incarnation has been a pretty mixed bag, but it still keeps on going without experiencing a reboot. Other franchises like the Fantastic Four movies or Daredevil and its spinoff were terrible from the start, and were put to bed pretty quickly. Or, all of the movies tied into the current Avengers universe are pretty good, so they seem like they're going to go on forever. Heck, all it took was one stinker in the Spider-Man franchise for it to go from being a huge money-maker to a new series that was rebooted with a completely new cast and a completely new filmmaking team.

The X-Men movies have been going ever since 2000 though, with legitimately good movies and real stinkers right next to each other in its catalogue. It seemed for a minute like 2011's X-Men: First Class was going to finally be a clean restart for the Marvel-created mutants, after a decade of cinematic ups and downs, but by now it's clear that director Bryan Singer's upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past is going to be linking that movie into the first franchise, in order to create one big, weird family of movies that it's always hard to anticipate the quality of.

Review: 'Furious' #1

My initial thought while reading Dark Horse's "FURIOUS" #1 was that readers would inaccurately and rashly equate it with Marvel's "Kick-Ass". Real life superhero stirs up media attention chaos ensues. I cannot stress enough; cannot articulate precisely how much the similarities end there. What Bryan J. L. Glass has created is a very current and relevant look at how our access to social media can transform a person, whether they're conscious of it or not. Glass is showing us how a superhero would survive a 21st century, millennial generation, information-obsessed world.

Ephesians 4:2 - Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

"I can hardly tolerate that man," Jerry said through gritted teeth. He was referring to one of the deacons who was always trying to suggest a better way to do things. Most of the time his ideas were really just strongly phrased opinions that did not benefit the body of Christ as a whole. "The church would be a great place to be if it weren't for all the people and their opinions."

The Beginner's Guide to Anime, No. 31

The series covered in this column has some similarities to last week's piece covering The Irresponsible Captain Tylor. It is a comedy, based on a series of light novels not translated into English. However, whereas the former is science-fiction, this series is a fantasy in the Tolkienesque, DungeonsPrincess Amelia Seyruun, a shrine-maiden whose belief in justice often leads to more problems than solutions; and Xellos Metallium, a priest whose true powers and motives are often shrouded mystery.

One of the central appeals of The Slayers series is that it is very funny comic treatment of the fantasy genre. The show often mocks the situations the characters find themselves in which themselves parody various elements of fantasy. While it is arguable that the characters are somewhat two-dimensional, the stereotypical roles they mock are handled well.

Herman Melville's Daily Routine and Thoughts on the Writing Life

"A book in a man's brain is better off than a book bound in calf -- at any rate it is safer from criticism."

After my recent exploration of , I found myself revisiting a decade's worth of notes and marginalia on the and of literary greats, and inevitably remembered some I had missed in the visualization project. Among them was the immeasurably beautiful daily routine of HERMAN MELVILLE found in the wonderful 1954 volume () -- a collection of notable meditations on the osmotic arts of reading and writing, on "the technology of language and its human aims," featuring contributions from such literary titans as , , , and .

It's hard out there for a feminist. We fight gender inequality and each other in equal measures sometimes, it seems. Pointing out bad feminists has become a . Check your privilege while tone policing the discussion of intersectionality of binary genitalia and all of that. But I hope, despite all the back-and-forth and finger pointing, we can all agree that other women - despite our many flaws and frequent short fallings - are not the ultimate enemy. A culture that thinks women can be driven instantly wild and become mindless sex machines because of a stupid body spray is the real enemy.

Though free wifi still doesn't seem to be standard practice in every hotel, one thing that is a given is that every room will have a television, and at least a handful of the standard cable channels.I don't own a TV at home, and though I selectively stream a handful of shows, I don't have to subject myself to standard TV commercials, and so often I'm unaware of the latest buzz. While I was on the road, I noticed a lot of buzz on the TV about a new movie called Loan Survivor--a military movie supposedly inspired by the true story of some Navy SEALs.I have to say, it takes a lot of balls to give away the ending of your movie in the title, but I was intrigued, and so I decided to do a little research.Turned out the film was based on a book which was based on the true story, and so I could save myself the hassle of putting on pants, and just download the book from the Kindle store.

Spy Vibe talks with writer today about working with classic characters from the world of pulp fiction and 1960s cult TV. His publications include Green Hornet, The Avenger, Captain Midnight, The Phantom, Sherlock Holmes, Tales of the Shadowmen, and work with Philip Jose Farmer. His new book is a crossover adventure starring . After sharing our interests on-line, Eckert and I finally had a chance to hang out in person last summer at . A group of us spent the weekend going to bookstores together, shopping for vintage toys and games (I found him a copy of the Man From U.N.C.L.E. game), attending panels and signings, and staying up late discussing cool stories. We had a blast at PulpFest, and I recommend Spy Vibers check out the event. Columbus is a nice location and you'll meet great people (and see amazing collections of vintage books and magazines!). Now, let's dive into our interview with Win Scott Eckert.

When did you first discover the world of pulps? Were there specific characters or images that drew your attention?

The Great Depression

PETER CATRANIS

THE GREAT DEPRESSION was a severe worldwide in the decade preceding . The timing of the Great Depression varied across nations, but in most countries it started in 1930 and lasted until the late 1930s or middle 1940s. It was the longest, most widespread, and deepest depression of the 20th century.

MILONGUERO - SOCIAL TANGO!

Tonight we were taught improvisation and intimacy with repetition of the same combos. I felt quite sleepy and didn't snap out of it until halfway in! We also dance in a dark basement cocktail bar, not like the bright lights of the Dancehouse. We didn't need to warm-up in a circle, instead we started with the 8 steps in line before partners. 'G' asked me about Monday Tango at 8pm again but I told her it's Tap and Jazz night, maybe I can spare Jazz to try one Monday with her? Can't be next week, maybe the week after?

America Moves to the 'Open-Free Quadrant' OR What Really Happened to Morgan Molthrop

Social media has blurred the lines between our personal "selves" and our so-called professional image. If you want to know what a potential client is interested in or what they believe, you simply Google them, examine their Facebook Timeline or follow their Twitter feeds. Poor LinkedIN, which is openly referred to as "Facebook for Old People," is the last bastion of old-line career professionalism: that is, it's the only place where people can pretend that they can separate work, home, Instagram and Ashley Madison. But, as the Snowden affair has shown us, everyone is bound to know everything about everyone.

In Psychology 101 we studied Johari's Window. Illustrated below from a graph I pirated off of the Internet, I believe we, as a society, have moved from the "Hidden" - that is, "I know, they don't know" Quadrant to the transparent "I know, they know" Quadrant. To put this in social media terms, LinkedIN is still trying to help people maintain illusions. Everyone else - especially the upcoming generation - couldn't care less. Just look at what we/they are posting. Those who grew up using the technology will be the workforce of tomorrow. America, where are you going to find enough "professionals" from among the hordes of teens that are today hogging cyberspace with TMI?

][ wool, wool, wool . . . or, I covet stuff and babble a lot to keep warm

It's been cold, people. Bitter cold. Psycho cold. I've always been good at winter, and even I am struggling with this one. We had eight or ten inches of snow last week, and I'm getting used to single-digit temperatures in the morning. And we don't even have it bad.

I have accepted that fog and frost will just be constants for a while.

[BD Review] 'Only Lovers Left Alive' Moody and Eccentric

Jim Jarmusch'sOnly Lovers Left Alive--a sultry vampire movie in the tradition of The Hunger--is front-loaded with a killer cast. Tom Hiddleston (Thor) is Adam, a centuries-old vampire rocker, living as a Detroit recluse and growing increasingly depressed. Tilda Swinton is Eve, his longtime girlfriend, currently living in Tangiers--one hell of a long-distance relationship. Soon, Adam's depression runs so deep, he special orders a wooden .38 bullet with thoughts of suicide, and Eve is compelled to fly to Detroit to help him through the darkness.

Anton Yelchin plays Ian, Adam's hirsute rocker sidekick and wooden bullet procurer--a human familiar, of sorts. With fears of blood contaminants common, Adam is forced to buy clean blood from a local doctor, played by Jeffrey Wright. John Hurt is vampire Christopher Marlowe. Yes, that Christopher Marlowe. Even Mia Wasikowska shows up late in the game as Eve's sister, Eva, and it doesn't take long before she's drinking up all the O-Neg in the fridge and draining the occasional neighbor.

In Which President Obama Name-Checked Mad Men While Talking About Equal Pay For U.S. Women

Last night's State of the Union was very much like the Academy Awards. People were honored, people were bored, camera operators got a workout trying to find the right people in the audience. Just swap the political and pop-culture references (one or two political mentions at the Oscars vs. one or two pop-culture items at SOTU). Check out this relevant clip from PRESIDENT OBAMA'S SOTU last night then hit the jump to look at a depressing image of how many Congressmen stood up for this part of the speech.

A little less than half the room is seated (or were at least slow to rise). I guess women being treated equally isn't something to get excited about.

Five older anime series for beginners.

*Cross posted from my sister blog.

Me and My Tom Today

I dedicate this and all of my other writings about my late sweetheart Tom to him and his family members and other loved ones, some of whom continue to witness and/or support my art/work, and therefore life, even after his passing. I also dedicate my writings about Tom to those who identify with certain traits of his and think they might've liked the guy (which I've shared privately with current friends and lovers), to those who have lost loved ones, those who attempt spiritual mediumship/afterlife communication, and/or those who work hard at what they love, and play and especially love even harder.

Tom loved to read my writing and was always checking me out on Facebook. Although he never said the words, "You're a really good writer," he thirsted for my words as he did my essence and one of my fondest memories is seeing his reading glasses on top of a pile of my chapbooks on a shelf in his bathroom. He only kept one book in there, usually, and he savored whatever he was reading.

First Poster for FIFTY SHADES OF GREY is All About Christian

So it's been a little while since we've reported any news regarding the adaptation of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY, from the wildly popular book of the same name by author E.L. James. The film has been shooting for quite some time now, with production shifting away from our neighbor to the north in Vancouver, Canada, to the sunny shores of Florida due to extremely cold weather (polar vortex people). So details, photos and the like have been scant to say the least, but today, we have something pretty cool.

Focus Features, along with director Sam Taylor Wood, have released the first official poster for the highly anticipated psycho-sexual drama, and it prominently features the star of the show - Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey. Here it is:

Pointer On Putting Up Above Ground Swimming Pools

Picking which above-ground pool to buy is a large decision. It goes without saying, it is a significant addition to your backyard. Different type of above-ground pools are offered these days, from oval to oblong to vinyl to powdered steel! There are a couple of things you have to think about while making your choice of which kind of swimming pool to acquire.

Do your study about the job it takes to maintain tidiness of an above-ground swimming pool.

Tofu Pad Thai

As a good and honourable citizen of the world is my duty to warn you that this dish stinks. Treat the cooking of Pad Thai as you would a paint job - wear clothes you don't mind ruining, and make sure there's a steady flow of air throughout the process. Make this if you don't mind the distinct smell of cat piss wafting from your kitchen. Make this if you have been coerced into a date with Mick Hucknell; I can assure you it will end as soon as it begins. What Mick never stayed long enough to find out is that tofu is delicious when treated with respect, and that peanuts, tamarind, shrimp paste and noodles are a match made in heaven.

I love how the flavour profile of pad thai is very unique. This is particularly a result of the tamarind, coriander, peanuts and fish sauce. So, admittedly, this recipe isn't 100% vegetarian friendly. Although as a strict veggie in the past I substituted fish sauce for soy sauce or a bit of stock, I quote one brutally honest pad-thai fanatic: "Usually I just leave it [fish sauce] out, but then the meal comes out less than spectacular". And you don't want that, now do you?

Mediator Dei 151-153

Let's turn our attention to the liturgical year according to Pope Pius XII:

151. Throughout the entire year, the Mass and the divine office center especially around the person of Jesus Christ. This arrangement is so suitably disposed that our Savior dominates the scene in the mysteries of His humiliation, of His redemption and triumph.

What? Amazon on the console bandwagon too?

? Ok. I could see the Steam Box. The PC game library offers a similar calibre of game as traditional console gaming. And, there are many more PC "exclusives" than any console has ever gotten. So, if there is a market for console games, there is quite likely a market for playing PC games through a console to the TV.

But Android games? I hope this rumour is false. This would be beyond stupid. Plus... aren't there already a out there that tried this already? Honestly, the only thing on that list I've even heard of before is the OUYA. And I don't know a single living soul who owns one.

When I Don't Want to Go to Church

There is no delicate way to say this - I barely made it to church yesterday morning. The truth is, I didn't want to go.As a pastor's wife, this probably sounds blasphemous, but it is the truth and if nothing else, I want to be honest with you on my blog.Sundays are a strange animal when your family is in the ministry. My husband is up early preparing to preach and I am usually up between 5 and 6 so I can ready myself and get a little time reading God's Word before being interrupted by our kids and breakfast, or any of the other routine or crazy things that try to steal my focus before getting to fellowship with my church family.Yesterday morning, though I did not get up at 5 or 6 or even 7.I laid in bed as though my limbs were lead and did not move except to turn my alarm off.My husband came and held me, his arms holding me as I wondered how I could be doing this to my family.

First Android bootkit malware spotted; reportedly found on over 350,000 mobile devices, most in China

A new trojan for Android has been discovered that resides in the memory of infected devices and launches itself early on in the OS loading stage. Even if some elements of the threat are removed successfully, at least one component will still reside in the protected memory area and will reinstall the malware after a reboot and, thus, re-infect the system.

The threat, detected as "" by Russian security firm Doctor Web, is believed to be the first bootkit for Android . A bootkit, for those who don't know, is a kernel-mode rootkit variant that can infect startup code in order to attack even attack full disk encryption systems as well as minimize the possibility that it will be deleted without tampering with the device's file system.

New Box Set Explores The "Love, Poetry and Revolution" of '60s British Psychedelia

It's only appropriate that "a journey through the British psychedelic and underground scenes" would remain one of the best-kept secrets of late 2013.Love, Poetry and Revolution is the name of the recent box set from Grapefruit, the Cherry Red Group's dedicated U.K. psych imprint.(Grapefruit is also responsible for featuring Marc Bolan.)Over nearly four hours, this3-CD set surveys the fertile, creative period in the U.K. musical underground between 1966 and 1972 in which various styles were all blossoming: psychedelic rock and pop, progressive rock, acid folk, even psychedelic blues.

In his introductory note, compiler David Wells notes that "psychedelia and the underground was always a broad church, a house of many windows that sought to incorporate poetry, jazz, pop, folk, rock and many other aspects of the arts."And so Love, Poetry and Revolution touches on all of those sounds. The box draws on bands both well-known (The Spencer Davis Group, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Hawkwind) and all but unknown (Sun Dragon, Neon Pearl, Crocheted Doughnut Ring) over the course of its 65 trippy tracks which are arranged in chronological order.Best of all, each and every track is accompanied by an individual note in the 36-page booklet delineating the original release information as well as details on the artist's background.

Monday Morning Uni Watch

One of the sadder aspects of covering the uniform beat is that it's my job to watch the Pro Bowl. And that aspect of the job was never sadder than last night. I had considered getting one of the interns to handle it, but that seemed too cruel. So there I was last night, along with the Pro Bowl's 23 other viewers, parked in front of the teevee. Sigh.

You know the drill: The uniforms featured highlighter colors and GFGS and generally looked like what some D3 school would wear . I'm fairly certain the following words have never been said before (at least not truthfully): You'd have been better off watching the Grammys.

Lijiang and Shangri-la!!

Inside my hostel in Lijiang. Note the adorable puppy

Despite the rather hurried decision to come to Lijiang one day early, my welcome was pretty warm. My hostel was gorgeous. It's called Panba Lakeside Lodge and it's right next to the Qingxi Reservoir with a great view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Lijiang is known for having some of the cleanest water in China, which, admittedly, isn't a very difficult feat. It has the best water in a country where the water supply of one of the largest cities has dead pigs floating in it? Oooooh boy! But actually, the water was crystal clear in the reservoir. I would feel pretty comfortable drinking directly from it. The one big, big problem with my hostel was the lack of heating. It is made of concrete, which makes it look super modern and industrial. While this jives really well with my aesthetic preferences, it's hard to appreciate it when I'm shivering. Because of this, I wasn't a very happy camper when I first arrived. Being the sort of person who doesn't speak up when I'm not happy with something (particularly in the service industry), I was prepared to endure an unpleasant couple of nights. Luckily for me, my roommate, Bella, was not nearly as passive. After telling the hostel staff, they provided us with a space heater, and I was more than happy with the rest of my stay.

Young Actresses Should Learn From Amy Adams, The American Hustle actress

WHAT YOUNG ACTRESSES SHOULD LEARN FROM AMY ADAMS

There's more to Amy Adams than plunging necklines. The American Hustle actress, fresh off of a Golden Globe win for Best Actress in a Motion Picture -- Comedy or Musical and an Oscar nomination, has established herself as one of the best actors of her generation regardless of gender. What the younger actresses coming up through the ranks will hopefully pay attention to, however, is the manner in which she's crafted a career full of interesting choices.Adams isn't a fearless actor just because she's willing to plunge the depths of her emotions to portray a character. What truly makes her fearless is that she's just as engaged while singing with animated squirrels as she is when playing a conflicted young nun.Considering the number of young actors who are painfully aware of being under the microscope at all times, be that from their own social media presence or everyone else's, Adams' approach should serve as a reminder about how to make each performance count. Every actor is instructed to fully commit to a part, but far too often it's obvious when performers feel that they're doing something beneath them. Film is such an intimate medium it really is hard to mail-in a performance without the camera picking up on it.Adams' career has seemingly been a balancing act between heavy and light. After toiling in smaller roles in both film and television, her breakout performance in the indie film Junebug was followed by more mainstream notice in, of all things, a Will Ferrell movie (Talladega Nights). The year that she fully leapt into movie stardom in Disney'sEnchanted, she also appeared in the awards-friendly Charlie Wilson's War.During a stretch in 2010-11, Adams hit the big screen with Leap Year, a frothy romantic comedy, followed by her Oscar-nominated role as a Boston tough girl in The Fighter, and then moved on to dancing and singing with Kermit and Miss Piggy in The Muppets. At no point in any of those films did Adams feel out of place or seem self-conscious about what she was doing. She gave each role exactly what it called for and was seemingly unworried about how it would be received.Like Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock just before her, Meryl Streepbefore them, and a litany of other actors and actresses, Adams has embraced a varied slate of roles with equal abandon. Movie audiences can only hope that the group coming on Adams' heels -- including herAmerican Hustle costar Jennifer Lawrence -- is paying attention and will strive to follow a similar path.HTTP://WWW.HOLLYWOOD.COM/NEWS/MOVIES/56743030/YOUNG-ACTRESSES-LEARN-FROM-AMY-ADAMS

2014 Directors Guild Awards

Prior to the 66th Annual Directors Guild ceremony tonight, the race for Best Picture was very close between Gravity, 12 Years A Slave and American Hustle. The DGA were not televised but were hosted by Jane Lynch at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles. Ben Affleck, Sandra Bullock, Tom Hanks, Don Cheadle, Kerry Washington, Anna Kendrick, Steve Coogan and Bill Hader were all scheduled presenters. The guild honors directing achievement in film and television. Alfonso Cuar n won Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for Gravity. Interestingly enough, at the DGA, each nominated director for feature film gives a Feature Film Nomination Presentation. Basically they each give an acceptance speech just for being nominated. Winners and nominees for all categories are listed below.

It should also be noted that at the 25th Annual Producers Guild Awards last Sunday, Gravity and 12 Years A Slave tied for Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures. Basically, the Best Picture equivalent of that ceremony. The guilds are very interesting because while not as well know as the Golden Globes, the membership in the guilds overlaps with the voting branches of the Academy. Actors vote in the four acting categories, directors for Best Director, make-up artists for Best Hair and Make-up, etc and everyone votes for Best Picture. The guilds can be a much more accurate predictor of the winners that the Academy will select. In the previous 24 years of PGA Awards, the guild has correctly matched the eventual Best Picture winner 17 times (including Argo last year). The PGA Awards use a preferential ballot system to crown a winner much like the Academy. The Directors Guild gave Best Director to Ben Affleck for Argo last year and it was part of the whole brouhaha about him not being nominated for a Best Director Oscar. In the 65 year history of the DGA awards, the winner has failed to also take home the Best Director Oscar only seven times. Argo ultimately won Best Picture last year and as a producer of the film, Affleck still got his Oscar and an acceptance speech on the Oscar stage. Only time will tell if Cuar n will win Best Director and if the guild wins will accurately predict a win for Gravity for Best Picture. I think at this point American Hustle and the other nominees are out. It will continue to be a close race between 12 Years A Slave and Gravity.

Review of Tsutsui's The Girl Who Leapt through Time

Yasutaka Tsutsui has started to attract quite a significant following for those of his works that have been translated into English (this, of course, is in addition to the many readers of the original Japanese texts). I myself have reviewed Paprika, Hell and Salmonella Men on Planet Porno elsewhere on this site and enjoyed them all to different extents. There is another work, The Maid, noted on the back cover page blurb, which I have not seen anywhere but will be glad to pick up if I get a chance Tsutsui clearly has a very vivid imagination and a willingness to explore serious themes through the use of absurdist science fiction or speculative modes of writing.

The Bokashi Experiment

Our new composter and bokashi bran

Let me start by explaining that we don't have trash service where we live. We take our trash to the recycling and trash drop station every few weeks. Food scraps don't go in the trash cans at our house. Otherwise, the they would be so stinky by the time we got to the transfer station that nobody would want to take it. Further compounding our food scrap problem, we don't have a garbage disposal because we're on a septic system.

Winter 2014 Harem Hill, Week 4: A lesson in how to sow your seeds

Good news: it's time for Harem Hill again, the only reason why anyone reads this blog! Wait a minute, that's not good news. That's horrible news. What have I done?NOURIN EP. 3

So let's see what our plucky farmers are up to now. Kousaku returns to his room to find all of his Yukatan stuff have been thrown away. How horrible. Minori readily confesses to the deed, but wait! Don't condemn her just yet. She did it for him. People always seem to be skeptical when I throw terms like "surrogate mother" around, but the anime can't be any more blatant about it here: "Your mom begged me to do so. I have to take care of you for her. That's why I won't allow you to go on a date with that bitch as long as I live!" Don't forget that Minori wrote down on her career survey that she wants to be married, married, and MARRIED. And what better way to prove your worth as a future wife by also mothering the crap out of the harem lead! Boy, I'm sure Japanese girls are just lining up to play mother to their boyfriends. No wonder Japan is having so much sex right now and current dating trends look incredibly healthy. Thankfully, shows like NOURIN are around to make sure boys grow up with the right set of expectations.

The Merits Of Dead Sea Skin Care Products

By Marissa Velazquez Dead Sea skin care products are commodities which are used for beauty purposes these commodities are prepared by various companies. The main materials used by these companies are obtained from dead organisms that live in the sea. There are very many people that have subscribed to the use of these commodities probably due to the value they find in the products from these companies.

Marine organisms have been identified as a category that contains very high levels of nutrients. These organisms thus have also been selected in the preparation of beauty products given the value in their minerals and other components. This is the main reason behind the selection of these commodities in the preparation of the beauty creams. Another reason that the manufacturers appreciate is the ease in their availability.

Controversial 'Powerpuff Girls' Comic Book Cover Pulled By Cartoon Network

A swirl of controversy surrounds a Powerpuff Girls comic book variant cover that was set to ship in February from IDW Publishing. Cartoon Network chose to pull the plug after a series of complaints came to light. The cover was meant for the sixth issue.

One unhappy observer, a comic book retailer named Dennis Barger Jr., posted his complaints on Facebook:

Asimov's Science Fiction February 2014

We get three novelettes, four short stories and five poems in this edition of the magazine and we start with 'Schools of Clay' from Derek K nsken which takes to a more alien environment than we usually see in general science fiction. Diviya had been a worker in the regolith fields of his asteroid homeland who had been raised up to the dizzying heights of doctor when the Powers deemed him suitable to have a soul. But Diviya's background meant that he fought the dictates of his soul as he repaired the damaged bodies of his fellow workers. To some degree the characters and their motivation were sort of familiar - most species will have similar motivations at the most basic levels just in order to survive however alien the implementation of that survival form. The forms of Diviya and his compatriots probably didn't look much like ants but that was the form of society that most came to mind when reading the story until we got to the exodus section which doesn't really act on the editorial introduction of using time travelling as an element even though it is a nice use of the relativistic temporal distortions. Again, it did drag a bit at this length but equally a shorter story wouldn't have done the descriptive stuff much good.

'The Long Death of Oxford Brown' by Jason K Chapman takes a look at that perennial favourite of science fiction of the last thirty years or so, the uploaded person. At 73 Oxford Brown is more than ready to follow his beloved wife onto the servers of AftrLyf and join her in whatever reality she had created there. But once the event had happened and he'd found himself in the AftrLyf arrivals area, he begins a journey both to track down his wife and an inner journey as he learns the rules of the strange worlds he now inhabited. As I've said, this type of story has been popular for an age but I've rarely read one that is so singularly focussed on the virtual word - it's not uncommon for the virtual denizens to be plotting some form takeover of the real world, or vice versa for that matter, but here the inhabitants are, by and large allowed a great deal of freedom. Oxford does eventually find his wife but also finds that their life together wasn't what he'd thought it had been. He also finds a new role for himself.

Health Transformation Challenge: Day 19

Today was a very exciting day for me.I don't feel much different, but I decided to try on the clothes I wore in my Day 1 Health Transformation Challenge photo .To my disbelief (truly - I didn't believe it), my body is transforming and I didn't even realize it.Whoa!I had no idea I would see results this quickly. It gave me a HUGE boost at CrossFit today and I felt so energized that I was actually making a difference without losing weight.I feel like I am getting closer to my goal and it feels A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!I used to get those feelings when I was losing weight, but now that I have been maintaining for a couple years, I haven't had that kind of a rush in a while. So, I sent my husband and my coach a picture, I showed my kiddos (this said I didn't have as many bumps anymore) and now, I am unveiling the picture to y'all:

Can you believe that?I couldn't.I still can't; I just keep staring at it.THIS is what I needed to keep going to all those insane workouts and make all my other healthy choices about sleep, food, stress, etc.I don't know why anyone would pass-up this Challenge - it's awesome and it's free!

Fantasy & Science Fiction Extended Edition Nov-Dec 2013

Along with the usual editorial stuff we get a novella, five novelettes and two short stories in this edition. Less successfully for a magazine being read on a phone, there were also a number of cartoons. Personally I would have preferred more short stories but hey, we've got to go with what we're given and at least my kindle app usually remembers where I'm up to in a story these days

The novella is 'Success' from Michael Blumlein. This was a bit of a mishmash in my opinion as we get the tale of Dr Jim who was fired from his university job at the painfully young age of 36 due to his increasingly eccentric way - professors are supposed to be eccentric but there are limits and when he started his search for the Unifying Theory of Life the university reckoned he'd reached them. His wife stood by him almost all the way but when the device in their back yard continued growing over her objections she found her limits - and her own track towards tenure forced her to look at her own priorities. as I said above, I did find it a bit mushy but it worked better as a study of a mental collapse than as a science fiction or fantasy story.

The following article arrived in my in box this morning from David Suzuki . I am copying it in its entirety since it expresses exactly what I would write.

I have not used the image that accompanied the text since it does not actually depict the dangerous DOT111 cars that are one of the causes of the present problems. DSF chose a picture from flickr (good) that comes from Europe, where they use a quite different car (oops!)

LASU CRISIS: Lagos Assembly Grills VC

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, western Nigeria, on Friday grilled the management of the state owned tertiary institution, Lagos State University, LASU, following the crisis rocking the institution.

Among those who honoured the House summon on Friday include the Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Obafunwa, representatives of the institution's Students' Union Government, SUG, led by Hassan Mojirade, and three representatives from the Students' Ruling Council led by Sanni Sadiq and the state Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye as well as the Special Adviser to Governor Babatunde Fashola on Education, Lateef Olukoga.

The Israeli Air Force's Super Secret PHOTINT Surveillance Squadron

THE IAF'S 100 SQUADRON PROVIDES CONSTANT REAL TIME INTELLIGENCE AND BUILDS UP TARGET BANKS. IT'S THE OLDEST AIR FORCE UNIT, PREDATING THE FOUNDING OF THE STATE AND CLOCKING MORE FLIGHT HOURS TODAY THAN ANY OTHER SQUADRON.

On any given night, a Hofit ("stint") plane might fly over the Israel-Lebanon border, as a team of intelligence scouts on board pours over images from the ground, snapping high quality photographs and searching for Hezbollah activities. The scouts will send their data back to Military Intelligence, which will proceed to analyze the visual intelligence, and build up a database of targets that will be activated in the next clash with Hezbollah.

StumbleUpon-owned video recommendation service 5by launched for Android and iOS

, the video recommendation servicein September last year, has finally released its first apps for Android and iOS devices.

The service allows users to quickly start watching videos by making suggestions based on certain factors. As well as taking into account the time of day and what mood you're in (Videos for'Entertaining You', 'Showing Your Friends', 'In Transit' etc), it's also possible to filter video suggestions by length - so if you only have time for a two minute video, it won't suggest something that's 10 minutes long.

Five older anime series for beginners.

*Cross posted from my sister blog.

21 Movie Headlines That Don't Belong on a Front Page

Fun trivia: Googling "Joe Don Baker Mitchell remake" yields negative-3,000 results.I brake for far fewer movie-news articles than the average geek. I still like movies, but what passes for movie "news" nowadays generally doesn't merit my time or clicking because the majority doesn't meet my minimum specifications for "news". I have no vested interest in following the full life cycle of every production from germination-of-idea to perennial-AMC-airings.

I can think of numerous examples off the top of my head for most steps of the filmmaking process and marketing campaign. To illustrate my apathy, let me walk you through the vantage point of internet news outlets -- not official sources such as The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, or Nikki Finke, but the other guys. Pretty much all the other guys.

Being Human

The UK version made their exit last year which was really sad to see the series over. Perhaps replacing the characters with a new generation of a ghost, werewolf and vampire hurt the show. Although, I really loved the bromance between Tom and Hal.

Yet the Canadian/USA version is in full throttle this season on the SyFy channel. And nobody does it better on TV with ghost stories like Being Human does with Sally's tragic endings and troubled beginnings this season. She's having to share her space with the ultimate witch.

IN FACT, WITH THE SHOW NOW DOWN BOTH PIERCE AND TROY (DONALD GLOVER) WITHIN A THREE EPISODE RANGE, IT ALMOST FEELS LIKE THIS SEASON IS NOTHING BUT SAYING GOODBYE TO THE OLD, FAMILIAR COMMUNITY AND SAYING HELLO TO A LOT OF CHANGING DYNAMICS. HOWEVER, IN TERMS OF EMOTIONALLY RESONATING CONTENT IN ORDER TO SAY GOODBYE TO ONE OF THE SERIES' MOST BELOVED CHARACTERS, IT SEEMED RIGHT THAT THE SHOW DECIDED TO GO OUT IN AN EPIC GAME OF LAVA, AS INSTATED BY ABED (DANNY PUDI).

GUIDE ARROWS ON THE STREET

In Sleeping Dogs, while driving to a destination, I get turn by turn directions in the form of guide arrows that appear in the middle of the street. You don't have to glance down at your minimap to confirm that you are going in the right direction, ever. It sounds like a small thing, but it drastically cuts down on collisions and it's minor convenience is something you can't live without after a couple hours.

Ernest Borgnine: MARTY, McHALE'S NAVY and more

MY BORGNINE TOP 5

1. MARTY DUH! HE BREAKS YOUR HEART IN HIS OSCAR WINNING ROLE.

'Invisible Woman' shows up with slow elegance

Celebrity, gossip, longing and infidelity all go under the microscope in ' The Invisible Woman,' a gorgeously framed period piece whose focus on Charles Dickens, of all people, makes it even more attractive to the art-film crowd.

Ralph Fiennes not only plays the noted 19th century novelist with a spring in his step and idealistic spark in his eye, but directs with a much more restrained aplomb than he did with the boisterous 'Coriolanus,' his first assignment behind the camera.

A Confession and a Quilt Show.

I know I've told you before that I'm "technology challenged". Do you remember me recently complaining that all my photos taken in this new house with caramel colored walls making the photos turn out dark and have a golden look? Guess what...it's NOT my new house or the fault of the paint colors I chose. It is ME and my POOR photography skills. I noticed a tiny icon on my camera that looked like a camera. I turned the knob to that and took a picture. ****OMG, it was not dark or golden! That setting makes it auto adjust the exposure. Problem solved and didn't I feel like a MORON! I don't know why that knob had ever gotten changed. By accident I'm sure, since I'm not one to experiment with different settings on anything electronic or technical. Boy, am I a happy camper again. I can take pictures I'm not embarrassed to share! So here goes.

This is a quilt I made in 2001 (?) after buying the pattern at the Chicago Quilt Expo. Sorry, I couldn't find the pattern to give credit to the designer here. I hung this on the wall in the guest bedroom and took my first "miracle" picture to test the camera in the proper setting. See! NO GOLDEN GLOW!!!

She's Baaaaack!

For the very few of you who follow "Crafty Thoughts and Blonde Moments," I'm back. I feel as though I should be in a confessional. "Forgive me, Blogspot, for I have been absent. It's been over two years since my last post "

I had slacked up on blogging my thoughts, rants, comments and observations in 2011. But then in June of 2012, my world completely changed. I lost my husband to an unexpected heart attack. It was a shock to be sure and the past 2 years have been a time of tears, transition, trepidation, toughness and turnaround for me (hey, I'm out of practice so I had to do some alliteration drills). It was difficult to post a blog topic because so much of my humor came from, was directed at or was shared with him. Thankfully, all the things "they" say are true: time heals, you are never given more than you can handle, you are tougher then you think, and so on. I will miss him very much, but with his sense of humor, he'll want me to move on and blog on.

On the EZLN's Escuelita and Neo-Zapatista Autonomy

Originally published on , 23 January 2014

As many readers of Counterpunch are likely aware, the Chiapas-based Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) has recently launched an open initiative called the Escuelita ("little school"), a four or five-day program by means of which outsiders, both Mexican and international, are invited to reside with Zapatistas to learn more about the EZLN's politics and the daily lives of the organization's members, as well as to promote cultural exchange. The openness reflected in the launch of the Escuelita stands in contrast to the relative aloofness of the organization in recent years--with the EZLN's command observing a period of silence for more than a year after Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos' of the Israeli military assault on Gaza during winter 2008-9. Of course, at the end of the thirteenth Baktun and the beginning of the fourteenth (21 December 2012), up to fifty thousand Zapatistas through five of the municipalities the EZLN had liberated in its 1 January 1994 insurrection--thus overthrowing their prior reclusiveness while dialectically preserving their verbal quietude. Indeed, in this sense the Escuelita's founding recalls the early years that followed the EZLN's public appearance with its uprising, when the organization hosted --and even Intergalactic ones--that brought together radical thinkers and dissidents from Mexico and the world over to publicly strategize on ways to bring down capital and the State. I was greatly pleased, then, when in response to a form I had sent the EZLN some time ago, I received a letter signed by Marcos and fellow Subcomandante Insurgente Mois s inviting me to the second round of the First Level of the Zapatista Escuelita, to be held in late December 2013.

THE SIMPSONS ET AL

The first episode of the full series of the Simpsons was broadcast the Christmas of 1989. The series gained popularity and is now one of the most famous cartoon series in the world. It is best known for it's adult humor which makes it appeal to teens and older. In 2007 a feature length movie was produced and coaxed the production of the series into using digitally drawn cells instead of the scanned plastic cells they had insisted on using prior, when most other cartoon series had moved onto digital such as Futurama and Family Guy, which were also produced by Fox and both were aimed at an adult audience.

Belief

23 JANUARY 2014

A short word with such a weight to it. I can't think where to start. Things that come to mind: "belief systems" - that may trap us in a particular way of thinking, for example 'the earth is flat', 'man can't fly', 'men don't like clever girls'. Someone saying "I'll believe it when I see it!", usually with a note of sarcasm in their voice. neat turning around of that into "I'll see it when I believe it."

Weight Loss Pill Turns Into Balloon When Swallowed

After, the doctor pulls the tube out through the patients mouth, leaving the balloon floating in the stomach. Up to three balloons are introduced to the stomach over the 12-week period, with placement depending on patients fullness and weight loss progress, according to the product website. This fills the stomach, in turn making the patient feel more full. The devices makers claim overweight and obese patients can lose up to 20 pounds in three months.

Ducati Monster 900 by Hazan Motorworks

Most people would be happy with a completely stock Ducati, but Max Hazan is not most people, and decided to custom build this Ducati Monster 900 motorcycle.

Taking a minimalistic approach to the build, Hazan replaced quite a few components on the bike while still keeping things simple. Aside from the engine (which was tweaked a bit), wheels, and half of the frame, everything else was swapped out. The entire original rear section of the motorcycle was chopped off, and Hazan handmade a new one along with a rear mudguard, rear cowl, custom fuel tank, spartan foam seat, Harley-Davidson headlight, and a whole lot more. On the performance side of things, this Ducati had its carbs rejetted, and has been equipped with an open intake to replace the standard airbox, custom headers, and carbon exhausts. All of the vehicle's electronics (including the battery) have been neatly hidden within the bike's tank, finishing out the look nicely. [Via]

The Top 5 Biopics of American Leaders

With Martin Luther King, Jr. Day this week, it's a good time to reflect on the history of our nation's esteemed leaders. The more influential a leader is, the more eyes are focused on the films and books that cover his or her tenure, and that is never truer than with a biopic. A great biographical movie can inspire hopes and dreams, while a bad one can tarnish the subject's reputation.

Today we'll look at my picks for the top 5 biopics of American leaders, in no particular order.

Happy Birthday Grandma

This blog is an exploration of how we form intimate connections with people through food.I am amazed and fascinated by the power of a meal to create bonds between strangers, strengthen bonds between family members, and deepen bonds between lovers. In my life, I am particularly interested in how food and cooking is forming bonds between me and my stepchildren. But food is such a central part of my family that sometimes cooking functions to provide the unexpected.

Today we honor my wife's grandmother on her 92nd birthday. She's lived in the same house in Los Angeles for over 60 years with a small, simple kitchen... a kitchen that is a second home to my wife and her siblings. My wife and I with her brother visited with Grandma over Thanksgiving.Of course that's a holiday loaded with tradition and very specific foods. However, this past year that was to be turned on its head for me.The three of us had hoped to cook in her kitchen and share that experience with her.It is what we created that surprised me.

Catie's Yummy Rice Stuff

...or, I I prefer to pronounce it, risotto. I first made this with America's test kitchen recipe (the variation with chicken, of course). I made it twice with that recipe, come to think of it, both times successfully, and then I abandoned the book (I am too much like my mother to follow a recipe for long).

*INSERT BEAUTIFUL VINTAGEY HEART-WARMING IMAGE OF RISOTTO HERE*I think it looks nice, don't you?Anyway, enough with my aspiring (expiring?) photography skills. I made this at Christmas for the lot of us (a most delightful occasion), and had the pleasure of hearing it called all manner of names, which will not be repeated here (ricotta! chicken and rice soup, indeed!). Since I made more than usual, and apparently was in too great a hurry (Anthony Andrews was saving the Dauphin, people! How could I concentrate? That's what comes of having TSP playing during food prep) to measure my liquid or my cooking times adequately, the rice turned out a bit crunchy in the center. *I* didn't mind--I was happy in my knowledge that Percy and Margot were reunited--but it led to some conversation with a very wise person after lunch.

Wise one: That was good, but nothing beats a good old [American] chicken and rice soup.Me (in a huff): Well. Italians have been eating risotto probably longer than America has been in existence.Wise one: It should have stayed in Italy, thenMe: Italian immigrants brought it to America--Wise one: You know why they came over here?Me: Sure.Wise one: I'll tell you. They were tired of eating risotto!Ha. hahaha.Joking aside, here's the 'recipe.' If you want something more useful, go to this link http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/member/views/ALMOST-HANDS-FREE-RISOTTO-WITH-PARMESAN-AND-HERBS-AMERICAS-TEST-KITCHEN-50122790CATIE'S YUMMY RICE STUFF 5 cups of chicken broth, diluted with water as needed (sometimes we use homemade broth, which is way stronger than store-bought)2 cups of rice--they recommend Arborio; I find it a bit pricey, so we buy huge bags of sushi rice. Great stuff to have on hand.1 onion, chopped. This is what gets the family interested.1 garlic clove, squashed and maneuvered into acceptable texture. I have omitted this before, without disastrous results. If the onion didn't get everyone interested, this will.1 cup white wine. Gasps and horror. I usually just use extra broth; my attempt with a bit of wine vinegar and broth went awry because Mom stores regular vinegar in the bottle, and I didn't both asking. That was interesting.A nice bit of butter--to cook the onion in, and add towards the end.A nice bit of chicken. I always skip the browning stage recommended in the book because those horrible frozen chicken tenders we buy don't brown well. at all. Often, if we have any leftover shredded organic chicken, I use that. You know how much you like. Some rather nice herbs--chives, parsley--whatever. Basil is particularly lovely. I've used mint too; it was not quite so popular, but I liked it.Lemon juice, if you likeQuite a bit of Parmesan. I cheat and use 'green cheese,' that is, the stuff in the canister. I have also cheated and used a bit of mozerella, monterey, cheddar, pepper jack, etc., on those occasions when I discovered that my shaking the container would not result in any more parm coming out of the container. I never measure cheese or herbs, as I'm sure you've noticed--eyeballing is a useful skill here, even if it sounds gruesome. The more dairy the better, folks. Generally speaking.

To help with this, Dr. Friedman asks clients to embark on several changes until they find "that one big thing" that works best for them.

How to prepare for software audits

How many copies of Office or Photoshop or SQL Server has your company paid for? How many are you actually using? If the numbers don't match up, you've either wasted money because you've paid for more licenses than you need, or you've caused an unexpected expense in having to catch up with all the installed copies you don't have licenses for. And worse yet, if an auditor finds this out before you do, you could get slapped with a nasty fine. No matter the scenario, not properly tracking your software negatively affects your finances.

Odd Bits. On Captain Phillips, Protests in Kiev, and King Leonidas

Hello, gals and guys. I don't have too much for you today, just an odd bit of news and opinion.

I watched last night with the wife. The movie isn't bad, but it sure as hell isn't an 8.1 on a 10 scale, which is what it's pulling on Rotten Tomatoes. Too many reality gaps for my tastes. For example, why did the SEALs parachute in? They could have landed via helicopter on the Bainbridge's flight deck. And did all the SEAL have to pass a beauty test? They didn't look like the guys I worked with in the Navy. To add insult to injury, the end was a bit too drawn out. The rescue could have been done ten minutes sooner, and the emotional watch-Tom-act scene at the end was painfully boring.
